Photoshop Workflows for Pattern Designers

Photoshop Workflows for Pattern Designers

As a design educator, I love teaching my people ways to increase their workflows in especially when it comes to design programs and business. Here are my 3 tips for licensing artists and designers working in Photoshop.

1. Save all your motifs on the cloud

Saving individual motifs onto the cloud allow you to pull them into your various designs. This is super helpful when you want to create different variations on the theme.

2. Learn how to use Layer Comps

Using layer comps allows me to create different colour ways from my pattern with out having to create multiple photoshop files for each separate colourway.

3. Invest in quality mockups

I've spent quite a lot of time during my uni days and early on in my career searching for free psd mockups. While you'll save a bit of money, the pay off is usually that the mockups out there are poor quality or give you limited editing capabilities. You can't hide objects in a scene or modify the colours to the background and/or object. I've found that the Creatsy sell pretty neat ones which satisfy all of the above and their customer service is pretty swift in responding to questions. (we're not affiliated by the way)
